Joining a gym or fitness centre

It's getting colder and while many people are getting the urge to hibernate, others are planning on hitting the gym to keep fit and healthy in the chillier months. It is a good idea to carry out some research before splashing out on a gym membership. FitnessNZ, the trade association representing health and fitness centres, has a useful site and it features a brochure on What to look for in a gym, fitness or health centre. Things they recommend you to consider are:

  • Location - It must be convenient and fit into your lifestyle
  • Staff - Are they qualified, helpful and friendly?
  • Surroundings - Would you feel comfortable exercising here?
  • Payment and contracts - Check the contract and make sure the payment schedule suits you.
  • Equipment - Is there enough?
  • Classes - Do they offer a variety of classes including relaxation activities?
  • Environment - What additional facilities does it have (spa, swimming pool, sauna, cafe, creche etc)?

Have a look at the localeye listing of Fitness Centres and the Christchurch City Council's Leisure centres to find out more about fitness classes and personal training. Currently hot in fitness classes are  Yoga, Tai Chi and Pilates - disciplines which emphasise factors such as strength, stretching, core stability, breathing and posture.

Buried Treasures

The World of Pets  ...

  • Pet boarding facilities

  • Pet stores
You can check out shops such as the Critter Kingdom and Taffs Pet Plaza online.
