Film Friendly Christchurch

Some visitors to Christchurch take photos. Others make movies. For these special visitors, Christchurch City Council's recently launched Film Friendly website provides a one-stop-shop, catering for makers of films, advertisements, or television documentaries who plan to use Christchurch and Canterbury's fantastic locations and facilities.

This 'Film Friendly' accreditation follows long term efforts by the Council to provide a supportive environment for filmmakers, as well as recent steps to adopt the best practice processes laid out in the Local Government New Zealand Filming Protocol. As part of this accreditation, Film NZ has agreed to promote Christchurch to local and international filmmakers.

Film South is the key marketing agency for filming in Christchurch and is core funded by the Christchurch City Council. Its services include information on location scouts and production crews; a substantial library of local images; and the ability to liaise on behalf of filmmakers with various groups, including government agencies and local Maori.

Interesting film links include:

  • Location Library - Examples of architecture, coastlines, countryside, forests, lakes and rivers, mountains, and roads.
  • Past Productions - About some films and television series shot in the region.
  • Filming approval forms
  • Journey to the Film location Edoras - Information from Ashburton District Tourism on the spectacular location Mount Potts Station, in the Rangitata river valley - the set for Edoras, the fortress city of the Rohan people in The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers.

Travelling by air

Air travel in the region has been a focus recently with the arrival of Richard Branson's Pacific Blue airline. It is scheduled to offer Christchurch/Brisbane and Christchurch/Melbourne flights.

The localeye Air Travel category lists the airlines operating in the region including major players like Qantas and Air New Zealand. There are also listings for smaller firms which offer scenic flights.
