Wild Food in the Country

The joys of food and drink are not limited to the cafes and restaurants of the city - connoisseurs find the Canterbury countryside and regions to their taste.

Many Cantabrians flock to the Hokitika Wildfoods Festival to get their taste of exotic cuisine - last year you could have sampled sheep's eyes, bull's penis sausages, bug larvae, seagull eggs and legs, scorpions, wild highland beef, curried Hoki Tikka, pesto ice-cream, mountain merino and venison tongue. The event takes place on Saturday March 13th.

Another popular day out is the Waipara food and wine festival on Sunday 28 March. It is the main event for the Waipara Valley Wine region with 15 wineries represented and 14 food tents.

localeye's Eating Out category links you to places to eat in the Canterbury regions.

Food Products lists regional producers including:

  • Karikaas Natural dairy products - organic cheese makers based in North Canterbury
  • Pure Wasabi - sushi lovers are familiar with this green paste. Wasabi is a condiment with a unique heat that doesn't linger in your mouth as chilies do.
  • Eight Moon Saffron - saffron is a highly valued and delicate spice and it is painstakingly produced in North Canterbury

And don't forget the Press on Thursday includes Zest - a great spot for gourmands.
