Water Use in Canterbury

Water, and generally the potential lack of it, plays an important part in the economic life of Canterbury. With current concerns like the El Nino weather pattern, the rapid growth of dairying and its impact on the water environment and proposed dams and irrigation schemes, localeye has a links to a range of useful sites.

Weather sites are many and varied. Check out localeye Climate and Weather for a listing of weather related sites.
Environment Canterbury - Water  provides specific water information links for Canterbury including rainfall monitoring from many sites around the region, river flows, water quality and safety.
Long term weather forecasting (2-3 months ahead) is provided by the  MetService   and also the agricultural site  Fencepost National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research is a Crown Institute whose site provides news and information about research and climatic developments.
In the city, dry conditions have occasionally meant  watering restrictions for gardens, but as a general principle the council encourages water conservation and sensible use. Its site  Waterwise  talks about why we need to save water and offers many practical tips on saving water around the home and garden.
