Learning about wine growing in Canterbury

Canterbury's Waipara region and the plains around Christchurch city are the locations in which to find great wine, vineyards and wineries. localeye links to their web sites in the category Out of town: Rural business: Wine. This listing can provide you with general information about grape production in the region as well as more about wineries, vineyards, wine production, viticulture and oenology in Canterbury.

There are broad, informative sites that look at wine production in the region such as New Zealand Wine. It refers to the growing areas in Canterbury:

  • The plains around the city of Christchurch, where grapes were first planted in the late 1970s (soils are mainly alluvial silt loams over gravel subsoils)
  • The more recently developed valley area of Waipara, an hour's drive north of Christchurch (chalky loams that are often rich in limestone)

It is interesting to note that Chardonnay and Pinot Noir are the most widely planted grape varieties in Canterbury, together making up nearly 60% of the region's vineyard.

TiZ Wine is another site which has information on wine growing, as well as featured wines and vineyards. It has sections on the Canterbury region and Waipara, North Canterbury area.

Tertiary institutions in Canterbury also offer opportunities for study in the area of viticulture, oenology as well as night classes in subjects such as wine tasting. Lincoln University has a Centre for Viticulture and Oenology and CPIT offers the Certificate in Viticulture and Wine Production.
