Research in Christchurch & CanterburyWhat is happening in the halls of academia, in laboratories and clusters, in monolithic buildings and rickety garages? Research. In Christchurch and Canterbury there are a wide range of studies being undertaken - some may end up changing our lifestyles, our health and future. Canterbury is home to CRIs (Crown Research Institutes) such as Landcare Research and Crop & Food Research, and the research oriented University of Canterbury and Lincoln University. The relevant government bodies are the Foundation for Research, Science and Technology (FRST) Tuāpapa Rangahau Pūtaiao whose mission is to invest in research, science and technology (RS&T) on behalf of the government to enhance the wealth and well-being of New Zealanders, and the Ministry of Research, Science & Technology (MoRST) Te Manatū Pūtaiao which manages the Government’s investment in RS&T, ensuring that the system runs efficiently. The 2003/2004 Budget for Vote Research, Science and Technology includes information on the current government investment in research (total investment is put at $556.9 million). The Budget will allocate up to $100 million annually for initiatives aimed at achieving the goals of the Growth and Innovation Framework. This framework seeks to enhance the existing innovation system; develop, attract and retain people with skills and talent; and increase global connectedness.
