Dilcoosha Garden, Styx Mill and the Kowhai Grove

The establishment of a new garden, a Kowhai Grove and a facade and workings of a historic mill are exciting new developments  planned for the Styx Mill Conservation Reserve.

A garden, named Dilcoosha, is to be established to recognise the work of internationally acclaimed botanist, Dr Leonard Cockayne (1855 - 1934) and his close association with the Styx Mill area.
Botanist, teacher and conservationist, Dr Cockayne was a dominant scientist in New Zealand from 1900 to 1934. Amongst other notable achievements he is credited with providing the original inspiration for the creation of Arthur’s Pass National Park.

A legacy from his father enabled him to purchase 15 acres “at Styx near Christchurch." This he did in 1885 and named his property Dilcoosha, a Hindustani word meaning “The Heart’s Delight.” It was at this property, known today as 275 Highsted Road, that Dr Cockayne assembled a collection of over 1,200 plants, including many alpine grasses. His research and experiments on this property led him to promote knowledge of, and respect for, New Zealand plants in their natural habitats.

The facade and workings of a mill will be constructed overlooking the site of the last Styx Mill in close proximity to the original mill house. The site will provide information about the historic significance of mills in the area and production processses of a bygone age.

The establishment of the Godley Kowhai Grove seeks to recognise the sustained and distinguished contribution made by one of New Zealand’s leading botanist, Dr Eric Godley (1919 - Present).  As head of the former Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR) for 22 years, under his leadership the division greatly expanded its research and extension programmes to become New Zealand’s principal centre for research on native and naturalised plants.
