Submissions open on Waitaki catchment resource consent applications
Although it is outside the Canterbury region many Canterbury people
will be watching with interest the progress of the Project Aqua resource
consents. The land use and construction applications, and one notice of
requirement for designation, from Meridian Energy Limited for its proposed
Project Aqua hydro-electricity scheme on the Lower Waitaki River
were publicly notified and opened for submissions on Saturday 6
December 2003. The resource consent applications for Waitaki catchment
water use called-in by the Minister for the Environment were also
publicly notified and opened for submissions.

What is your ecological
footprint?
The
government's Environmental Reporting Programme has information
about the "ecological footprint" of each region of the country.
There is also a calculator
to help you work out your own personal ecological footprint.
The ecological footprint calculator estimates the size
of your personal footprint using averaged national data
and information you provide about the things you buy
and use.
You will be asked questions about what you consume, usually
in terms of how much money you spend. So you will need
to know in some detail about household and personal spending
over the period of the year. A useful idea could be to
average your bills over the last twelve months to account
for seasonal differences or average a typical winter and
summer bill, and then try the calculator
