3-16 July KidsFest
New Zealand's biggest children's festival. Aimed at kids up to the age of 12, last year the festival featured more than 180 events and over 55,000 tickets were sold.

26 July - 1 August Maori Language Week
NZ Reo, NZ Pride is the theme. The challenge ahead is to encourage greater use of te reo in domains such as at work, shopping and when playing sports and in social settings.

City with a Mission

New City Missioner, Michael GormanIt is a good time to reflect on the work done by the Christchurch City Mission as the new City Missioner, local man Michael Gorman, is expected to take up his new role on 19 July. Canon David Morrell, retired in March after 21 years in the position.

The City Mission exists because many Cantabrians are at risk. Factors like unemployment, poor housing, family breakdown, drug and alcohol addiction, financial problems and abuse make life a real struggle. The City Mission works with these people to help improve their quality of life and offer them more self-sufficiency and independence.

Services offered by the Mission include:

  • Walsh House Women's and Children's Drop-in Centre
  • Budget advice, foodbank
  • Weekend and after-hours emergency services
  • Men's Night Shelter, Thorpe House
  • Women's Drug and Alcohol Recovery
  • Drug and alcohol social work services
  • Free health clinic, Court Chaplaincy, Inner-city neighbourhood work
  • Governor's Bay Vicarage Accommodation and Gardens Project
  • Clothing & furniture opportunity shops
  • Mt Grey Centre rehabilitation project for young people and their families in North Canterbury
