City with a Mission
It
is a good time to reflect on the work done by the Christchurch
City Mission as the new City
Missioner, local
man Michael Gorman, is expected to take up his new
role on 19 July.
Canon David Morrell, retired in March after 21 years in
the position.
The City Mission exists because many Cantabrians are
at risk. Factors like unemployment, poor housing, family
breakdown, drug and alcohol addiction, financial problems
and abuse make life a real struggle. The City Mission
works with these people to help improve their quality
of life and offer them more self-sufficiency and independence.
Services offered
by the Mission include:
- Walsh House Women's and Children's
Drop-in Centre
- Budget advice, foodbank
- Weekend and after-hours emergency
services
- Men's Night Shelter, Thorpe House
- Women's Drug and
Alcohol Recovery
- Drug and alcohol social work services
- Free health clinic,
Court Chaplaincy,
Inner-city neighbourhood work
