Trustee Elections 2004Billed as New Zealand's biggest democratic event, the trustee elections involve an estimated 2,580 schools around the country and take place during April of this year. The election theme is "Stand and Be Counted" or "E Tu Tangata". Parents, caregivers and the community are encouraged to stand so their schools have strong boards to ensure that their students get the best education possible. Trustees have the overall responsibility for a school, and they play an important part in ensuring students gain an education that provides them with the skills and abilities that will help them achieve their future goals. Trustees’ governance role includes strategic planning, and the management of property, personnel and finances. Standing for election for a board of trustees is a practical way of influencing the quality of our children's education. Being on the board is one of the most rewarding things people can do for children. A truly successful school is reliant on a dynamic board - one that can create the kind of supportive learning environment that drives education achievement. Who can vote in the Trustee Elections? The election is being run by the New Zealand School Trustees Association, in partnership with the Ministry of Education. NZSTA will be supporting boards as they prepare and run their elections.
