Your local community - online

Communities Online demonstrates that while the Internet may have fostered the idea of a "global village" of shared interests, local groups are sharing information and using the Web to enhance their own sense of identity.

The sites and groups listed in this category serve a variety of purposes. Some are focused on providing citizens with access to information and communications technology (ICT) and teaching them how to use it for their advancement. Addington has a community internet centre that is a base for training courses to teach people about the Internet, developing web sites, using email and other tools. Waltham Community Cottage's web site celebrates the local community and empowers people by helping them use the Internet.

Other sites are a source of community information, providing an access point to news, local businesses and activities. Cashmere has a community website that aims to make information available about issues, views and news as they affect the Cashmere community. The Selwyn District site has information on the Selwyn District including statistics, a business directory, what's on, activities, services, and an events diary.

The Department of Internal Affairs publishes a booklet Communities Online, designed to help iwi, hapu and whanau, and community organisations make informed choices about using ICT. It features case studies of ten projects and websites from throughout Aotearoa detailing success factors, lessons and achievements. There is also a section on Internet based resources to help organisations get online.
