Teenagers

Last month saw the launch of Pulse, a new website created by Christchurch City Libraries in consultation with teens from Christchurch. It links to useful information for teens on relationships, rights, news and what's on. Pulse shows that the Web is home to some great resources, both for local teenagers and those who work with them. The localeye category Children & Young people links to organisations for teenagers - from Scouts and Girl Guides, to youth advocates and support agencies. Live & Learn is another localeye area to browse - there are websites for schools and universities, and information on classes such as  music and dance.

LowDown is the Citizens Advice Bureau website for youth. It lets young people know about consumer and employment rights, legal ages, police roles, and tenancy information.

The Ministry of Youth Affairs site is where you can find out about the policies, programmes, legislation and services that concern young people in New Zealand. If you are working in an agency that works with teenagers, you may be interested in Keepin' it real. This policy was launched on 8 May 2003 in Stratford, Taranaki. It follows on from the Youth Development Strategy Aotearoa and aims to help government agencies, city and district councils and community-based organisations involve young people. It is a "how-to" guide to youth participation, describing  how adults can contribute to the positive development of young people by creating opportunities for them to influence, inform, shape, design and contribute to an activity or project.

Among upcoming events relevant to teens is Subvert - a New Zealand wide festival. Subvert offers young people the chance to use the media to get their creativity in front of the whole country. It doesn’t matter if the art involves paint with a brush or a spray can,  music on a computer or with an orchestra. Subvert is a Ydub project. Ydub is a group of young women working together to make a positive difference. It is part of the YWCA of Aotearoa New Zealand.

Volunteering

Have you thought about giving some time back to the community? localeye has a category on volunteering and there are a variety of options for the prospective volunteer to consider:

One of the major organisations to check with is Volunteering Canterbury. Volunteering Canterbury is an incorporated charitable trust that supports and promotes volunteering. They aim to uphold the integrity of volunteering and the rights of volunteers, and can help match individual interests with groups who need volunteers.
