Making Movies

Film friendly ChristchurchDespite the advent of home theatre systems, Christchurch people still relish the experience of going to the movies. The localeye category Film & Cinemas is a great resource for any movie lover, bringing together the web sites of our various cinemas. The Reading Cinemas at the Palms in Shirley are a popular addition, and a new theatre complex is planned for Westfield Shoppingtown in Riccarton.

Film festivals are a good way to view a range of different movies that may not obtain general release. From 17 - 20 June, the Lesbian and Gay Film Festival Out takes takes place at the Hollywood Theatre in Sumner. The Christchurch International Film Festival is coming soon too, running from July 29 to August 15. Some of the movies announced so far are Coffee & Cigarettes and Touching the Void.

The Belladonna Film Trust is holding its annual short film festival in the Philip Carter Auditorium of the Christchurch Art Gallery over three nights, July 11th, 12th and 13th 2004. The festival enjoyed great success in 2003 as a part of the biennial Christchurch Arts Festival and has become an independent event this year. It aims to give Canterbury a chance to see works by up-and-coming New Zealand film-makers and film artists.

Another way to get your filmic fix is to join the Canterbury Film Society. Their schedule of screenings is a diverse mix - including classics, recent West African films, 1960's Antonioni films, classic Preston Sturges comedies, three contemporary French documentaries, and Vincent Ward's first two films.
