2003
Highlights
The Christchurch City Council's annual
report for the year ended 30 June was published on
22 December 2003. It is a useful resource if you want
to see what happened in Christchurch. Here are some highlights:
- Each year the
Residents Survey asks Christchurch citizens questions
on subjects including quality-of-life and what they
think of Council services. In the 2003 poll, 92% of
people said they were satisfied with Christchurch as
a place to live, work and spend spare time in. More
than 40% would like to have more say in what the Council
does. The

- Atlantis
Leisure Pool opened at QEII
in August 2002 and was visited more than 700,000 times
between then and 30 June 2003
- The city hosted events including
the Oceania International Athletic Championships, the
International Deaf Bowls Championships, Supergames (World
Services Games) and the World Firefighters' Games
- The Creative
Community Grants scheme distributed about
$200,000, funding 123 groups
- Attendance at Council facilities increased by more
than 25%
- The Art
Gallery opened in May 2003
- The Library
had 3.2 million visits, 5.5 million items loaned and
almost 8 million online catalogue and database pages
accessed
- HIT Lab
NZ completed its first year of operation,
following early help from the Canterbury
Development Corporation
- Four major parks purchases were made - the Turners
and Growers central city site, 185 hectares at Richmond
Hill, 7.5ha at Mt Pleasant and just under 8ha at Ouruhia
Domain in Marshlands
- The last part of the Woolston Burwood expressway was
finished in April 2003
- Two projects to increase central city parking were
completed
