The Evolution of Christchurch cuisine

Christchurch is in the midst of a wining and dining revival. Malls are being revamped and new food courts increase our range of eating options. Restaurants, cafes and bars are opening at a great rate. Amongst the newcomers are Bean Scene, Legends, Frottage, the new Winnebagoes, the new Sophie's Hamburger heaven, Fusion, and the Seafood Kitchen.

As the hospitality scene grows and evolves, it is worth noting the results of a recent awards ceremony. On Sunday September 21st, the Kapiti Cheeses 2003 Canterbury Hospitality Awards took place at The Hotel Grand Chancellor, Christchurch. The high achievers honoured included:

  • Meadow Mushrooms Outstanding Chef Award
Tony Smith – The Crowne Plaza Hotel. His favourite recipe for Mushroom and Watercress is featured on the site. The Crowne Plaza is home to such popular dining spots as the Yamagen Japanese restaurant and Canterbury Tales
  • Moffat Outstanding Young Chefs Award
Glenn Wright – The George Hotel. The George has two world class restaurants - Pescatore and 50 on Park
  • Canterbury Region RANZ Outstanding Canterbury Restaurant Award
    Rotherhams of Riccarton
  • Kapiti Cheeses Outstanding Hospitality Venue Award
    The Lone Star Cafe
  • The Canterbury Region HANZ Outstanding Canterbury Bar Award
