Antarctic Connections

Christchurch is home to a thriving Antarctic industry - ranging from tourism connections - the International Antarctic Centre, Antarctic history connections around the city and at Lyttelton - to educational opportunities - the University of Canterbury's Antarctic studies. Underpinning all this are the business spinoffs from Christchurch being the departure for Antarctic flights.

Its is also home to the Antarctic Heritage Trust which was formed to  restore, preserve and protect the historical heritage of human endeavour in the Ross Sea region and elsewhere in Antarctica. Guardian of historic expedition huts of Scott and Shackelton. Now New Zealand men's clothing retail company  Hallensteins is launching a new range of menswear clothing called Scott Base with five percent of all sales going to the Antarctic Heritage Trust to fast-track the restoration of historic Antarctic huts and their contents.

This has been given added impetus by recent extreme storms which it is feared may have caused considerable damage to the historic huts.

"Courage or ambition may take you to the Antarctic but it won't take you far inside without being found out; it is courage and unselfishness and good temper and helping one another and a willingness to put in  every ounce you have."

Ernest Shackleton
