Christchurch Air Travel

Air travel from Christchurch is undergoing a renaissance - local consumers are being offered an array of competitively priced options.

The initial spur for this has been the arrival of Pacific Blue whose head office and home-base are located at Christchurch Airport. They launched their service by offering trans-Tasman services to Brisbane, and now their routes include return flights to Melbourne and Sydney.

Pacific routes are also opening up. On 25 February, Freedom Air received all the necessary New Zealand and Fiji approvals to commence scheduled services between Hamilton / Palmerston North / Christchurch and Nadi, Fiji. Direct flights from Christchurch to Fiji start on 13 May.

The airport is planning for increased business. A media release on 17 February from the Christchurch International Airport also states that concept planning is underway for an expansion which will see a $15-20 million dollar project incorporating four new international gates by the end of the year and a multi-million dollar revamp of the domestic terminal within the next four years. George Bellew, Christchurch International Airport Limited's CEO, says both projects have been necessitated by the significant current and projected growth in the number of passengers and flights.
