Predictions for the Year 2004

How confident businesses, primary producers, the financial industry and consumers feel about the future is a topic much watched and surveyed. As we begin the New Year here are a few comments from regular survey sources.

"General business confidence has slipped but firms are nonetheless optimistic about their own prospects heading into 2004. A net 16 percent of respondents expect general business conditions to deteriorate over the coming 12 months. This is down from 3 percent last month. The drop in confidence was across all sectors, but most stark in the manufacturing and construction industries. The proportion of optimists fell to 17 percent of replies, while the ranks of pessimists increased to 33 percent. With the NZD/USD pushing towards 0.65, a net 75 percent of respondents expecting the Reserve Bank to raise interest rates and a pail of gloom descending following the World Cup, business confidence is unsurprisingly on tenterhooks." National Bank Business Outlook December 2003

"Rural confidence continues to improve as the end of the year approaches, although the high value of the New Zealand dollar remains a major concern for farmers, according to the latest ACNielsen/Rabobank Rural Confidence Survey. Fewer farmers expect the rural economy to worsen in the coming months, with most expecting the current situation to remain well into next year." ACNielsen/Rabobank Rural Confidence Survey

“The feeling of optimism is universal" said Richard Miller, head of McDermott Miller Strategic Planning Consultancy which undertakes the Westpac-McDermott Miller Consumer Confidence Summary and compiles the Index. Most consumers consider themselves better-off financially than this time last year and are confident that the economy will continue to improve over the coming year. The signs are consumer confidence will continue to rise in the coming quarter. Consumers in all regions are optimistic, but Wellingtonians and Aucklanders are most optimistic of all. Collectively the metropolitan regions are leading the surge in consumer optimism. While the secondary centres and rural areas are also optimistic the gap in their confidence relative to the metropolitans is widening. The residential property boom and optimism generated by hosting major international events are factors in this” suggested Richard Miller. Westpac-McDermott Miller Consumer Confidence Summary
