Canterbury Development Corporation 

The CDC is Christchurch's economic development and employment agency which promotes economic growth within the region. The corporation offers a  broad range of services to business  that are free, commercially neutral and confidential.

Business services include:

# Business Start-up: a “Starter Pack” of information is provided for those intending to set up a new, or purchase and existing business. Business concept assessment is available through Company Rebuilders mentors. Business support is available to fledgling businesses for the first six months of operation.
# Business in the Community and Company Rebuilders mentors assists businesses and encourage them to plan, manage, meet challenges, and get results.
# Enterprise Training: offers a wide range of workshops covering all aspects of business management.
# Business Networks: CDC facilitates network meetings, which provide opportunities to meet and share ideas with other people in small and medium-sized businesses.
As well there are a range of employment services linking jobseekers and employers. 

The CDC also coordinates national and international investment in the region, facilitating:
* Joint ventures and trade opportunities between international and local businesses by introducing potential partners
* Corporate relocations to the region
* Investment in local business projects from immigrants and other investors seeking business opportunities

A number of industry clusters have been formed with the support of the corporation - international education, software,nutraceuticals and creative industries.

 

Fashion and Fun - the Clothing Industry in Canterbury

A record number of Canterbury designers have recently been selected for the prestigious L'Oreal New Zealand Fashion Week and a new clothing industry cluster,  Clotheslink Canterbury will soon have its website up and running.
  Six Canterbury fashion labels – Barbara Lee, Caroline Moore, Sakaguchi, Sharon Ng, tango and Untouched World – have been chosen to stage catwalk shows at October’s prestigious L’Oreal New Zealand Fashion Week. Outside of Auckland, Canterbury designers make up the second largest regional contingent.

The clothing design and manufacturing sector in Canterbury has many interesting firms.The firm which most often springs to mind  is the eponymous Canterbury.  Canterbury  is still the firm most closely identified with rugby jerseys worldwide.   Countries  wearing Canterbury jerseys at this year's Rugby World Cup include  Australia, Scotland, Ireland, Fiji, Japan and Canada.
As befits a region with plenty of the great New Zealand outdoors a number of firms have established successful niche markets for outdoor clothing using smart technology and design. Localeye's  Clothing and Accessories Manufacturers lists over 30 companies.
