Viewpoint: The Kyoto ProtocolOn 10 December, Helen Clark and cabinet minister Pete Hodgson signed New Zealand's commitment to the Kyoto Protocol. This commits New Zealand to reducing emissions of six key greenhouse gases to 1990 levels from 2008-12. The Associated Press reported the signing with the headline "New Zealand signs Kyoto treaty, says it is a business opportunity". It observed that Helen Clark said signing the Kyoto Protocol will boost innovation in New Zealand business and agriculture, while other industry leaders warned it would increase costs. "Farmers are part of an integrated supply chain from pasture to plate and will have costs imposed all along that supply chain compromising our international competitiveness," said Tom Lambie, president of Federated Farmers. Business NZ chief executive Simon Carlaw said extra costs would hamper export efforts. Articles in the media include: Environmental News Network, stuff.co.nz, NZCity, New Zealand Herald.
